File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is a network protocol used to transfer data from one computer to another through a network, such as the Internet.
FTP is a file transfer protocol for exchanging and manipulating files over any TCP-based computer network. A FTP client may connect to a FTP server to manipulate files on that server. As there are many FTP client and server programs available for different operating systems, FTP is a popular choice for exchanging files independent of the operating systems involved.

Spring is in!
It's amazing, you can almost time it to a T, when spring hits the air and those in the Westnet office with sinus issues start sneezing and snuffling. Somehow it's all so much easier to handle than the same symptoms in winter; knowing the sun's outside ready to drench us in goodness.
In our last edition, we did a popular cover of the Beijing Olympic Games. One of our WA members, Pamela Harrison from Donnybrook, pointed out to us the Paralympic Games were kicking off in September and said, '...those athletes are incredible, overcoming their disabilities, no matter how mild to perform at the Games. Pamela told us of a fellow-Donnybrook native, Sharon Jarvis, who was riding as part of the Equestrian team in the upcoming Games.
Sharon has limited strength and movement on her left side from the waist down as a result of having bone cancer when she was a child. Sharon will compete in the individual freestyle test and the individual championship at the Equestrian Centre in Hong Kong (all equestrian events for the 2008 Games have been held in Hong Kong).
The entire team at Westnet wishes Sharon well during her time at the Games - go Aussie! You can check out the Paralympic Games, the schedule and the athletes here.
We have three competitions for you this month; passes to see the new comedy featuring Will Ferrell, Step Brothers, and a huge Aussie Musichead 5 x CD Pack, as well as a copy of the latest from the New I Voci Singers.
Remember, if you have any comments or recommendations for the Westnet newsletter please email us at newsletter@westnet.com.au. We trust you will enjoy our September edition and we wish you the best of luck for our competitions!

In the September edition, Consumer Reports (a magazine an online publication of expert independent opinions - similar to Choice) issued a warning to consumers based on 'The Most Common Mistakes That Can Cause Data Loss and Identity Theft'.
Far be it for us to be remiss on passing on safety information for you while you're online, so here we go; a list of common mistakes and advice on what you can do to avoid an online blunder (these are taken directly from Consumer Reports):
| 1. |
Assuming your security software is protecting you. |
| |
Because security software is fully effective only when activated and frequently updated, consumers must renew their subscriptions when they expire. Most software requires an annual subscription fee, so pay up to stay covered.
|
| 2. |
Using a single password for all online accounts. |
| |
Using one password for all accounts provides easy access for someone looking to steal a consumer's identity. Try using variations on one password -- the best passwords use a combination of at least eight letters, numbers, or punctuation symbols.
|
| 3. |
Downloading free software. |
| |
Free downloads often come at the price of added spyware which can slow down your computer. To avoid spyware, download freeware from reputable sites like SnapFiles.com and Download.com
|
| 4. |
Thinking your Mac shields you from all risks. |
| |
Phishing scams are just as much a threat to Mac users as Windows users. Since Apple's Safari browser has no phishing protection, users should try Firefox or Opera instead.
|
| 5. |
Clicking on a pop-up ad that says your PC is insecure. |
| |
Clicking on a pop-up is never a good idea. Avoid accidentally opening the pop-up by carefully clicking on the "close button" or get rid of pop-ups altogether by enabling the browser's pop-up blocker.
|
| 6. |
Shopping online the same way you do in stores. |
| |
To avoid scams, use a separate credit card for Internet purchases and don't use a debit card. Or get a virtual account number from your credit-card company, which is good for only one purchase for a specific vendor. |

Westnet and Sony Pictures are giving members the chance to win one of 30
in-season double passes to see Step Brothers, the new comedy from the world's funniest pair, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly.
Brennan Huff (Will Ferrell) is a sporadically employed thirty-nine-year-old who lives with his Mum, Nancy. Dale Doback (Reilly) is a terminally unemployed forty-year-old who lives with his Dad, Robert. When Robert and Nancy meet, fall in love, marry and move in together, Brennan and Dale are forced to live with each other as step brothers.
As their narcissism and downright laziness threaten to tear the 'new' family apart, these two immature middle-age kidults (adults who behave like kids) will orchestrate an insane, elaborate plan to bring their original parents back together. But to pull it off, they begin to form a bond that maybe, just maybe, might finally get them out of the house.
For your chance to win one of 30 in-season double passes to Step Brothers, simply click the button below, complete the entry form and hit submit. Entries are limited to one per Westnet username. The competition closes at 12.01am (WST) on Monday, 22 September 2008.

Westnet and Musichead are giving members the chance to win one of ten Aussie Musichead 5 x CD Packs, featuring You Am I's Dilettantes, John Williamson's Hillbilly Road, End of Fashion's Book of Lies, Something With Numbers' Engineering the Soul, Empire of the Sun's Walking on a Dream.
There's something for the whole family in this one!
We've waited too long for the next instalment in the book of genius that is You Am I. Dilettantes is their eighth studio album, and one which immediately reminds you why it's still better to physically own the album rather than download it (the album sleeve is, quite simply, beautiful). Dilettantes is as beautiful as the name suggests (the name means folks who appreciate or dabble in art and culture) and it is apparent You Am I have begun to creatively experiment with sound and veer slightly from the rock you might expect to hear, though the voice of Tim Rogers is well and truly still there!
Then from the man who brought us the anthem True Blue and many-a-song about a sunburnt country, John Williamson, is Hillbilly Road. John Williamson varies his style from old style ballads to more contemporary numbers sure to please Dad in time for Father's Day!

End of Fashion's Book of Lies was recorded in Perth and features a new spirit and energy in the songs with an album full of brute for the twenty-something of the family. Engineering the Soul is the third studio album from Something with Numbers and we've been guaranteed fans will not be disappointed with their unique melodic rock.
Finally there's the first release from Empire of the Sun, the hard-to-find-any-info collaboration from Luke Steele of Sleepy Jackson and Pnau. Walking on a Dream is powerful in its unconventional nature with Luke's distinctive vox and pure Pnau beats.
For your chance to win one of ten Aussie Musichead 5 x CD Packs, simply click the button below, complete the entry form and hit submit. Entries are limited to one per Westnet username. The competition closes at 12.01am (WST) on Monday, 29 September 2008.

Adrian Fong
Software Systems
Adrian has recently moved into the role of managing both the database and software development teams. He has done a fantastic job of restructuring the teams, re-aligning their tasks and projects and just basically getting stuck in and getting his fingers dirty. He's supporting a number of new initiatives, is always free for a chat about anything, very level headed and knows his technical and people skills. We tip our hat to him. |

Ghost Train to the Eastern Star:
On the Tracks of the Great Railway Bazaar
by Paul Theroux
Way back in the dark pre-Internet, limited-air-travel world of 1975, the way to get from Europe to Asia was by train. A young and ambitious writer named Paul Theroux made his literary mark by taking the 28,000-mile intercontinental journey via rail from London to Tokyo and back home again. His book, The Great Railway Bazaar, became a travel-lit classic.
Thirty years later, an older, wiser, and even less sanguine Theroux decided to retrace his steps. The result is Ghost Train to the Eastern Star, a fascinating account of the places you vaguely knew existed (Tbilisi), probably won't ever go to (Bangalore), but definitely should know something about (Mandalay).
Get on board Theroux's fast-moving travelogue, which features some of the most astute commentary on our distorted notions of time, space, and each other in the age of jet speed, broadband connections, and cultural extinction. --Lauren Nemroff
