Services - Download Vault

Beginners Guide

The files provided in the Download Vault are programs written by people and companies from around the world. Some of these programs are completely free to use while others require payment after a trial period if you wish to continue using it. Please see below for further details about freeware and shareware.

Westnet has no connection with these programs in the Download Vault whatsoever and makes no representations regarding their suitability, reliability or performance. Questions or complaints regarding the software should be directed to the relevant program developer. Obtaining support from Westnet's HelpDesk is not guaranteed.

Whilst a lot of programs are ready to merely double click and install, some are compressed into a "ZIP" format which reduces the size of the file. Such files must first be uncompressed using a program such as WinZip or WinRAR etc, which are available from the Backup & Zip category. People with Windows XP computers will automatically have ZIP facilities.

Please be aware that the files in the Download Vault are available ONLY to Westnet members who are connected to the Westnet network. Downloading from any other ISP will not work.

The software offered in these pages represents only a tiny percentage of the freeware and shareware programs available for anyone to try. In the left side of the main Download Vault page are some other dedicated software sites which you might want to explore.

Types of programs

Freeware

Exactly that - free software. You can download and use freeware to your hearts content. The fact that a program might be free does not necessarily mean it's no good; there are some very good free programs.

Shareware

This is software that you can try out before you buy. It's a method of distribution. Shareware is copyrighted, but you can download it freely and try it to make sure it is suited to your needs. After satisfying yourself that the software is suitable, you must register and pay for it. Trial periods for shareware can vary from a week to 90 days, after which the program will generally cease to work. The average time limit is 30 days.

Adware

This is a program that carries advertising. They are typically programs that connect to the Internet so that the ads can be rotated. Adware programs are free to use, however, many support the option to purchase the program. This will remove the advertising banners and/or unlock added features not available in the "free" adware form.

Spyware

Sometimes confused with adware, spyware and adware are different. A spyware laden program installs additional tracking software generally without your knowledge. The tracking software monitors your surfing habits again without your knowlege or permission and sends the data collected back "home" to the developer who uses this info to deliver targeted adverts. Some spyware programs are also known toprevent you visiting certain (competitive) sites or send you to other sites than what you intended.
